Support throughout central vision loss

Macular Society

Macular disease is the biggest cause of registered blindness in older people in the western world, affecting more than one in five over the age of 90. Over half a million people in the UK live with late stage macular degeneration, and are unable to drive, read or recognise faces easily. Around 70,000 people are diagnosed each year. This figure will grow as our population ages.

Macular disease causes loss of central vision. Everyday tasks become difficult, falls can result among older sufferers and, if independence is lost, people can become isolated and depressed. Younger people with the condition can also struggle to cope as work and home life are forced to adapt. For those with the most common “dry” form of macular disease, there is no treatment. Where treatment is available, it does not restore lost sight. There is no cure.

The Macular Society (formerly Macular Disease Society) is the only national charity dedicated to people with macular disease. We sponsor research to find a cure and to improve quality of life for people now. We support our 16,000 members and more with information and advice, through our helpline and counselling services and a national network of support groups.

Legacies are vital to our research programme, and enable us to help those who would otherwise be without specialist support. Every gift, large or small, will help us give support and reassurance to people coping with macular disease and bring hope for future generations. Thank you for thinking of us.
